Cretan Hospitality

The word hospitality derives from the Latin hospes, meaning 'host', 'guest', or 'stranger. The word stranger in ancient times means one who comes from another country, the visitor and friend. Zeus, the "Father of Gods", was the patron of hospitality (xenia) and guests, ready to avenge any wrong done to a stranger.

In our days hospitality involves showing respect for one's guests, providing for their needs, and treating them as equals. According to Cretan culture, locals are expected to show hospitality to strangers, as opposed to personal friends and family members.
